Be Careful Little Eyes
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!” Matthew 6:22-23
Last night our friend, Mo Isom, posted on her Instagram story this verse and her thoughts "The spirit of Jezebel is alive and well. Wake up, sleepers. If you claim Christ as Lord... if you actually believe the Holy Spirit dwells within you... yet there is no disturbance in your spirit when filth is set before your eyes... You might want to assess if that light you think you have is genuine. Sleepers, arise!"
Social media is full of outrage at the halftime show last night. I know nothing about it. But I know what girls watch every Monday night. I know the world cheered as “I can sleep with who I want and Jesus still loves me” became the theme last semester. I know the shows most streamed on Netflix. I know the TikToks that are watched. I know the countless bathing suit pictures that are posted and the less dressed pictures that are sent. And I know the actions, consequences and conversations that come because of what is set before those precious eyes.
I have been thinking a lot about it. I wish I had known how destructive what I watched was and how much it mattered when I was growing up. How much it affected me. It matters. Our heart matters most. The world tells us fitting in, doing what everyone else is doing, knowing what everyone else is talking about, watching what everyone else is watching, being liked by everyone and looking like everyone is what we should be doing. “They are doing it, it is fine.” The enemy lies “Whatever it looks like today, chase that.” And he is winning there because he knows it will never be attained. We are just left still chasing.
The next verse is Matthew 6 says “No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other.”
We cannot live for the world and live for Jesus. It just does not work that way. We cannot constantly be pouring the world into our heart and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill our heart also. They do not coexist. They can not and they will not. We cannot run in two directions. We are either chasing the world or chasing Jesus. The enemy will tell us we can. He will fight to your grave telling you can, but you will not.
What you watch matters.
What you look at matters.
The eyes are the lamp into the body.
“If your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness”
You cannot have light and darkness.
Chase righteousness.
Chase Jesus.
“You should no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their thoughts... they became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more... be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.” Ephesians 4:17-32
